Last night I went to a Martyr’s Bonfire – which, I should tell you, was far less morbid than it sounds! Since yesterday was the anniversary of Patrick Hamilton’s martyrdom in St. Andrews, the Christian Union put on a bonfire by the beach to commemorate his life as well as the life of other martyrs throughout time. At first, I didn’t think a bonfire to honor people burning at the stake was a very kosher event but, turns out, everything was very respectful. We all gathered around hot chocolate, Cadbury eggs, and conversation whilst enjoying the brilliant evening. Towards the end of the night, a speaker gave a talk about how martyrs in their courage are different from suicides in their cowardice. Once again, the Christian Union found a way to bring all sorts of people together for a united purpose: to glorify God and share His love.
Today has been busy with class and Christian Union events, an indicator of the hectic days to come I’m afraid. Despite the brisk pace, I did find time to purchase some much needed Wellingtons (my first pair!) and enjoy an afternoon with a mentor from church. She’s an American who’s married to a Scotsmen (perfect!) and now living in the area. They attend Baptist Church and are simply another piece of life that has made my days so enriched here at the university. I’m really looking forward to growing as an individual, especially under the watchful eyes of people who are far wiser and experienced than I. Whenever I feel like I’m about to drown in my own sap, I only need to turn to the solid rock that God has so strategically provided.
I almost feel the need to apologize for the “religious nature” of this post but, actually, I’m not going to. Growing in my faith has been such a part of my study abroad experience and I would be lying to deny this reality. Here’s to living life to the fullest! Off to begin reading Joseph Andrews by Henry Fielding; hopefully I’ll finish this book before seminar on Thursday. :0)
Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
