Short, sweet, and simple

Today as I ventured out, my camera tagged along! I packed a picnic lunch and returned to that fantastic beach mentioned in the last post. Exploring craggy rocks and feeding greedy birds was terrific fun. A lot of families were out today and I’ve decided that British children are, by far, the cutest. Playing with ‘pails’ and pretending to be sea-monsters, called ‘kelpies’ in Scotland, I loved the imagination and excitement. Of course, I need to be careful not to get too idealized in my opinions; I’m sure little brats terrorize their parents in the UK just as they do in the US.

I also need to be careful to keep abreast of my assignments. British universities are far more independent than American ones as the obligation and responsibility to learn is placed upon students. Though I could explore from sunrise to sunset, I have to discipline myself to hit the books. I returned to New Hall this afternoon via the library, checked out a book on Defoe and will prepare my comments for tomorrow’s seminar on Robinson Crusoe. Timetabling is going to be everything. A novel a week in two classes is intense, and the only chance we have to get a grasp on the material. With that in mind, I’m off!
