BAM! Out of the bright, blue sky – when I least expected it – a Scotsman finally called me “lassie”.
I’m slightly sick of talking about myself so allow me to talk about some of the fantastic people I’ve met in Scotland, one of which is the fine chap who called me by the best word I could think of.
My church, as you all should know by now, is St. Andrews Baptist. What an amazing congregation of believers. Pastor Liam preaches the Gospel faithfully most every Sunday, Pastor Robert takes over the other days. Within the congregation, I’ve met a lovely family of Americans, fantastic brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as amazing women who’ve encouraged me so much in the LORD. After church, I got to play with the kids of that lovely family, we picked dandelions and giggled at little bugs. A good friend of mine, an American studying full time in St. Andrews, had some mates and me over to her flat to watch a movie this afternoon. We drank tea and ate scones, enjoying each other’s company. Then, I went to see even more friends by the beach, we played this crazy game called “Donkey” and watched the waves crash on the shore. Then, tonight, I went back to church where God placed so many people in my path to give me the best spiritual boost ever. That’s where I was called “lassie”.
In talking about marriage with two women of the church, one being Pastor Robert’s wife, the lucky man himself happened to wonder over. Pastor Robert is a Scotsman, true blue. He and his wife have been married many years and it’s clear they’re still crazy about each other. In giving me some words of encouragement about dating and whatnot he said, in a rolling Scottish brogue, “Don’t you worry lassie, the right man will come along soon.” Lassie! Did you hear that? Finally, it happened. And I didn’t even expect it!
Most importantly, I am so grateful to have been so welcomed and accepted by such an awesome fellowship of believers. Call me crazy (which I probably am!) but I really love going to Baptist. I honestly look forward to Sundays. God is doing something very special in this church, and I’m so blessed to catch a glimpse of that work for these four and a half months.
